I'm ready to get my life back. I will tomorrow. Well, I take that back. Tomorrow is the last day of all the extra hours (although, it's kinda nice when the paycheck comes since I'm on hourly.) So, it's more like Saturday when normalcy returns. Anyway, I want to "celebrate" by making a visit to Big Truck Tacos.
Before it opened last July, the buzz around town was unlike anything we've ever heard or seen. Two ladies, {the taco twins}, revamped an old drive in diner (the kind you pulled in to, pushed the button from your car, and waited for a carhop to bring your order) and gave it a very cool "hang out" feel. The inside is small and cozy, and no matter where you sit, you're going to have to get to know your neighbors. Sometimes even sharing a table. But on the nice days, you can sit at one of the several picnic tables where the "drive in" parts used to be.
So, they were so swamped after they opened, for months and months, from open to close. They didn't have time to get the Taco Truck on the road. I actually don't know when they were finally able to get it up and going, but everyone wants to know where it's gonna be.
Anyway, the menu is something else. You won't find your normal Tex-Mex, greasy ground beef. No, you'll see tacos like "The Guardian" - ground bison picadillo with poblano peppers, or "The Flaming Lips" - hickory smoked tongue with pico and avocado.
One of the coolest things on the menu is "The Fifth Amendment" and basically, you order it, and don't know what you'll get. The premise is that it's what ever they make up for the daily special. And it can be changed on a whim, because more often than not, it's so delicious they run out, meaning a new special can be created, and no one is the wiser. They post on their Facebook page every night after close what the 5th was for the day.
Here are some posts directly from their page about the 5th:
5th...lunch: spiced shrimp, fennel, onion, bells, mexican la crema, fresh grapefruit....dinner: spiced shrimp, artichoke hearts, onion, mushroom, spinach, arugula, spash of red wine vinaigrette....all good stuff, not beef heart today ; )
5th....fried plantain, roasted chuck w/ guajillo chili, mango salsa....diggin' the plantains!!!
5th....grilled chicken, spinach, grilled onion, goat cheese, smoked tomato-jalapeno salsa

5th...asian inspired beef, cabbage mix, guac-a-sabi....
(they also do vegetarian 5th's sometimes too)

So you can see the menu isn't a typical taco shop. And you can see why I like it. If you ever make it to OKC, (Lord help you) you simply must put this on your itinerary.
